Part One Synopsis

Part One introduces the two main groups of human antagonists in Elyria—the Keepers (descendants of the goddess Solace), and Truthsayers (descendants of the god Kaos). It is told entirely from the perspective of The Girl—an unnamed direct descendant of Solace who can communicate directly with the goddess because of her bloodline. She is also known as the Last Keeper or the Last Matriarch.

The Girl is one of the last descendants of the goddess Solace. As a future matriarch of her people (the Keepers), she is blessed with the ability to communicate directly with the goddess. She also has the ability to store memories as well as receive visions. The Girl enters a meditative state where she communicates with her great-grandmother. Her great-grandmother gives her a warning—the last Truthsayer is coming to destroy the Keepers and their way of life. The Girl is also informed that she will become the last Keeper and will have to shoulder the burden of being a goddess’ conduit alone—a job that will eventually kill her.

The last Truthsayer comes with his army of Mages and commits a mass genocide against the Keepers. The Girl escapes to the Room of Knowledge beneath their main house where she hides in a concealed Seeing Room. In her Seeing Room, she enters the meditative state again, and is forced to witness every time one of her people dies. She watches as an apparition of her soul, unable to affect any part of the world around her. As the Last Keeper, she is also forced to store these atrocities in her memory. This experience turns her cold and vengeful.

The last death she is forced to witness is that of her great-grandmother and mother. Before her great-grandmother dies, she passes a vision along to General Rohak d’Alvey—someone who The Girl learns will be important to both the gods and the impending war. The last Truthsayer—also known as the Warlord or Lord Alois d’Refan—kills what he thinks is the last of the Keepers in order to obtain and read one of the artifacts of Fate. To his disappointment, the artifact is unreadable because he did not succeed in eliminating the entire line of Keepers. He burns the village of the Keepers to the ground and leaves with the artifact.
